Simons is a clinical psychologist with research interests in the development and treatment of depression and other related disorders. Specifically, she focuses on how the complex interaction of biological, psychological and environmental factors lead to the development of various disorders including depression and substance use. She has a particular interest in the developmental period of adolescence. A second line of research focuses on the implementation and dissemination of empirically supported treatments for both adolescent and adult depression. At present, the most effective forms of therapy are largely unavailable to those who could benefit. Simons is a Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Her work is published in several top journals including Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Simons joins the University of Notre Dame faculty from the University of Oregon where she served as Director of Clinical Training and Director of the University of Oregon Psychology Clinic.
