Counseling Program
The program in counseling psychology provides excellent research and clinical training, preparing students to thrive in both academic and professional careers. In the context of this dual focus, the program is nevertheless especially suited for students who aspire to research and academic careers.
In addition to specialty training in counseling psychology, students acquire expertise in statistics, research design and methodology, and gain a broad and general knowledge of the field of psychology. Students undertake their own research projects during their very first years in the program and continue to work on various research projects throughout their graduate careers. The program aspires to train academically oriented psychologists. Graduates will appreciate how science and practice mutually inform one another to advance the discipline and to enhance human functioning.
Faculty research interests include cognitive vulnerability to depression, the impact of social stigma and discrimination, psychotherapy process and outcome, clinical research methodology, secrecy and self-disclosure, stress and depression, coping with chronic illness, cross cultural and multicultural clinical competencies, marital discord and depression.
Clinical training begins with basic skills courses and proceeds to practica at the University Counseling Center and in a variety of community agencies. The clinical training emphasizes professional skills and experiences that enhance competence in working with multicultural and diverse populations.
Students receive research and teaching assistantships covering tuition and stipends to support their education in the first through fifth years.
