George Stephen Howard, age 77, Emeritus Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in Wheaton, Illinois, after a long illness. George was born June 8, 1948, to Margaret and John (Sis and Pop) Howard in Bayonne, New Jersey. While he left Bayonne as a young adult, Bayonne never completely left him! George was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His kindness, sharp mind, and gifted storytelling will certainly be missed by all of those whose lives he touched.
George dedicated his professional life to teaching and research. After a brief stint teaching high school in the Bronx with the Marist Brothers, he earned his doctorate in psychology (where he claims to have achieved the lowest graduate GPA in Southern Illinois University history!). He spent his career as a professor of psychology, first at the University of Houston and, starting in 1981, at the University of Notre Dame. He loved to pursue provocative and challenging research ideas, was the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and books, and has made significant contributions to the field of psychology.
George was always deeply concerned with environmental issues, and early in his adult life resolved to invest in enterprises that he believed would make the world a better place. This pursuit, along with the desire to try something different, led George to cofound the solar development company Innovateus Solar with his friend, the late Tom Kanczuzewski. Working with Innovateus was one of the great joys of George’s life, from the end of his academic career through to his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gulanick, his sons John Gulanick and Greg (Katie) Howard, his sister Marion (John) Schroeder, and his grandsons Jack and Nolan Howard. His intellectual contributions survive in his many students, collaborators, and friends. The creative, generous, and playful ways he sought to be helpful to so many will always be remembered.
Graveside services will take place privately in Chicago. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 6. For details, email: georgeshowardcelebrationoflife@gmail.com.
