Research and teaching interests
Dr. Borkowski is currently engaged in a multi-site intervention project designed to better understand the factors that lead to child abuse and neglect in at-risk mothers. This NICHD-sponsored project gathers data in four cities and assesses a wide range of variables that produce neglect, its impact on child development, the role of community agencies in preventing neglect, and the potential for developing more sensitive and responsive parenting practices. A second, multi-site project intervenes early in the lives of at-risk mothers and attempts to reduce their tendencies toward child neglect by increasing interactive and responsive parenting practices. A third major longitudinal project has followed children born to adolescent mothers in the late 1980s, as they enter their turbulent teenage years; academic success, delinquency, and depression are among topics currently under investigation. We are also interested in interrelating the lives of teen mothers and their children from birth to age 18, as reflected in the 2007 book on Risk and Resilience (Erlbaum).
